Lower unit

8-25

Shimming

• Shimming is not required if the backlash is

within specification.

• Shimming is required when assembling the

original inner parts and a new lower case.

• Shimming is required when replacing the

pinion, forward gear, reverse gear, bear-
ings, shaft, or propeller shaft housing.

Selecting the pinion shim

Select the pinion shims using the measure-
ment(s) and calculation formula.
1.

Install the special service tools 

1

 and 

2

onto the drive shaft assembly 

3

 and

taper roller bearing outer race 

4

.

TIP:

• Install the drive shaft assembly 

3

 so that

the shaft is centered in the hole.

• Tighten the wing nuts 

a

 1/4 turn after they

contact the special service tool 

2

.

• Make sure that the distance 

b

 between the

special service tools 

1

 and 

2

 is equal.

• Make sure that the special service tool 

1

and drive shaft 

3

 are parallel.

Install the pinion 

5

, and then tighten the

nut 

6

 to the specified torque.

Measure the distance (M3) between the
special service tool 

1

 and the pinion 

5

at 4 points, and then calculate the aver-
age.

Calculate the pinion shim thickness (T3).
