Section 3: COOLING INSTALLATION
3.1 Precautions
•
Gyro is shipped with J2 Cable disconnected (see Figure 3) at Gyro Control J-Box to protect the
pump from being run dry and damaged. This cable powers both the glycol pump and brake
valve. Do NOT connect this cable until glycol reservoir is filled and connected as stated in Section
3.4.
•
The cooling system is a closed loop. Therefore, the fill reservoir must be elevated above the
highest point to purge all the air out of the system.
•
Do not attempt to disconnect the hose on the glycol pump outlet as this may break the pump
casing.
•
AC and DC power must be available to the gyro before glycol circuit can be filled.
•
Maximum sea water pressure in heat exchanger is 125 psi (8.5 bar)
•
Sea water flow requirement through heat exchanger is 2 GPM (8 LPM) or greater, under all
operating conditions of the boat.
When sizing sea water pump, installer should factor in losses
for raw water plumbing. In addition to initial operation at dock, new gyro installations should be
checked for minimum 2 GPM (8 LPM) flow while vessel is at speed and when backing down.
3.2 Required Supplies and Equipment
1) 0.8 gal (3 L) ethylene glycol
2) 0.8 gal (3 L) distilled water
3) Slotted screwdriver
4) Razor knife or tube cutter
5) Glycol fill reservoir and 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) ID tube
(Seakeeper Part No. 10353 - Glycol Fill Kit includes
reservoir and tubing)
3.3 Glycol Circuit Connections to Drive Enclosure
1)
After mounting drive enclosure, route and secure hoses from gyro. Hoses may be cut to
appropriate length.
2)
Slide hoses over beads on drive cold plates. Hose from hydraulic manifold goes to plate closer to
motor power connector. Other hose continues circuit to gyro.
