Parking Aids
ParkAssist
When the driver backs up, ParkAssist indicates the
distance between the car and an obstacle by
means of signal tones.
Warning!
Risk of accident. Even when using
ParkAssist, the driver is still responsible for
taking due care when parking and when
assessing obstacles.
f Make sure that no persons, animals or
obstacles are within the manoeuvring area.
ParkAssist is activated automatically when
reverse gear is selected and the ignition is on.
Note
ParkAssist is not switched on if the car rolls
backward without reverse gear engaged.
Ultrasound sensors
Sensors
Four ultrasound sensors in the rear bumper
measure the distance to the closest obstacle.
– Range of middle sensors: approx. 150 cm
– Range of outer sensors: approx. 60 cm
Obstacles cannot be detected within the blind
sensor area (e.g. near the ground).
f The sensors must always be kept free of dust,
ice and snow in order to ensure that they are
fully functional.
f Do not damage sensors by abrasion or
scratching.
f To avoid damaging the sensors, maintain suffi-
cient distance when cleaning with steam-jet
units.
Signal tones/function
When reverse gear is selected, ParkAssist
confirms that it is switched on by issuing a short
signal tone .
A detected obstacle is signalled by an intermit-
tent tone . The intervals decrease as the obstacle
is approached.
When the distance becomes less than approx.
30 cm, a
continuous tone sounds
. This contin-
uous tone can stop if the obstacle is approached
even closer.
f Set the radio volume so that the signal tones
are not drowned out.
Limits of ultrasonic measurement
– ParkAssist cannot detect sound-absorbing
obstacles (e.g. winter operation, powdery
snow),
– sound-reflecting obstacles (e.g. glass
surfaces, flat painted surfaces),
– and very thin obstacles.
Other sources of ultrasound (e.g. pneumatic
brakes of other vehicles and jackhammers) may
interfere with detection of obstacles.
