Engine Oils
Porsche engines are designed so that no oil
additives may be used.
Which oils are suitable?
f
Use engine oils which have been tested and
approved by Porsche only (Porsche approval
list). Your Porsche partner will be pleased to
advise you.
f
A label is located in the engine compartment,
which provides you with information (manufac-
turer) regarding the factory filling for your
engine.
f
Generally, manufacturer approvals are also
printed on the oil canisters or on a notice at the
dealer's.
These engine oils approved by Porsche can be
mixed with each other. Since, however, each
brand of oil has its own specially adapted compo-
sition, the same oil as used when changing the oil
should be used when topping up if possible.
Regular oil changes are part of servicing.
f
Change the engine oil more frequently in dusty
areas.
Oil quality
Engine oil is not just a lubricant: it also fulfils many
functions at the same time, such as component
cooling, component cleanliness, and protection
from corrosion. To be able to perform these tasks,
the oil is given additives that have been specially
developed for this purpose.
Mineral oils are extracted directly from crude oil.
A series of chemical processes can further purify
these oils (hydrocrack oils) or totally transform
them (synthetic oils). These oils are more efficient
than pure mineral oils.
Only hydrocrack or synthetic oils are approved by
Porsche.
Non-seasonal light-running oils
Non-seasonal oils are distinguished by their low
viscosity at low temperatures as well as a high
level of temperature stability and a particularly low
tendency to evaporate at high temperatures due
to their composition. Oils which can meet such
high performance requirements can be used as
non-seasonal oils while taking into consideration
the correct temperature range (see “Oils for the
correct temperature range”).
These oils also have good light-running properties
because of their low viscosity at low temperatures
and can therefore be referred to as non-seasonal
light-running oils.
Only non-seasonal light-running oils are now
approved by Porsche.
Viscosity
The viscosity (flow capability) is indicated by the
SAE viscosity classes.
The first number and the letter W (winter) indicate
the viscosity at low temperatures, e.g. 0W or 5W,
and 5W oil is more viscous than 0W oil.
The second number indicates the viscosity at high
temperatures, e.g. 40 or 50, and 40 is less
viscous than 50.
Multi-grade oils are identified by both viscosity
specifications, e.g. SAE 0W-40, 5W-40 or 5W-50.
Examples:
0W-40 and 5W-40 oils have the same viscosity at
high temperatures; however, at low temperatures,
5W oil is more viscous.
5W-40 and 5W-50 have the same viscosity at low
temperatures, but at high temperatures, the oil
with viscosity class 40 is less viscous.
Oils for the correct temperature range
Above –25 °C (–13 °F):
SAE 0W-40, 5W-40,
5W-50 approved by Porsche.
Below –25 °C (–13 °F):
SAE 0W-40 approved by
Porsche.
Engine oils approved by Porsche
Only oils on the Porsche approval list.
Your Porsche partner will be pleased to advise
you.
