Oil Performance Recommendations
The use of quality engine lubricating oils combined with
appropriate oil drain and filter change intervals are critical
factors in maintaining engine performance and durability.
It is recommended that a high quality SAE 15W40 heavy
duty engine oil which meets the American Petroleum
Institute (API) performance classification CE/SG be used.
NOTE:
CC/CD or CD/SF engine oils can be used in areas
where CE oil is not available, but the oil change
interval must be reduced to one half the interval
given in the maintenance schedule.
A sulfated ash limit of 1.0 mass percent is
suggested for optimum valve and piston deposit
and oil consumption control. The sulfated ash
must not
exceed 1.85 mass percent.
Oil Viscosity Recommendations
The use of multi-viscosity lubricating oil has been found to
improve oil consumption control and improve engine
cranking in cold temperatures while maintaining lubrication
at high operating temperatures.
While 15W-40 oil is recommended for most climates, see the
v i s c o s i t y r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s f o r e x t r e m e c l i m a t e s
(Figure 8-1).
NOTE:
Limited use of low viscosity oils, such as 10W-30
may be used for easier starting and providing
sufficient oil flow at ambient temperatures below -
5° C (23° F). However, continuous use of low
viscosity oils can decrease engine life due to wear.
New Engine Break-In Oils
Do not use special “break-in” lubricating oils for new or
rebuilt engines. Use the same type of oil during the “break-in”
as that which is used in normal operation.
DIESEL FUEL
The Cummins Diesel Engine operates most efficiently with
No. 2 diesel fuel in temperatures above 0°C (32°F). When
operating in temperatures below 0°C (32°F), use No. 1 diesel
fuel, or a blend of No. 1 and No. 2 diesel fuels, most
commonly known as “Winterized” No. 2 diesel. Use ASTM
No. 2 diesel fuel with a minimum Cetane number of 40. No. 2
diesel fuel gives the best economy and performance under
most operating conditions. Fuels with Cetane numbers
higher than 40 may be needed in high altitudes or extremely
low ambient temperatures to prevent misfires and excessive
smoke.
