24-Byte Sense Data Description
When byte 27, bit 0 is ‘1’, the sense data uses 24-byte compatibility mode
. Bytes 0
through 7 and 24 through 31 are common to all formats in 24-byte compatibility
sense. Bytes 8 through 23 depend on the format in bits 0 through 3 of byte 7.
Sense Bytes 0, 1, and 2
The Internal Disk generates sense bytes 0 through 2 when it presents a unit check.
These bytes describe the type of error and identify what specific action to take for
error recovery.
Byte 0, Bit 0–Command Reject:
Occurs for any of the following conditions.
(Sense byte 7 identifies the error condition in more specific terms.)
1. A command, or a sequence of commands is not valid.
2. An argument in a command is not valid or not complete.
3. A write command violates the file mask.
4. A command in the domain of a Locate Record or Locate Record Extended
does not conform with the operation parameter.
5. The operation parameter of a Locate Record or Locate Record Extended
command specifies an operation the file mask inhibits.
6. A Multitrack operation in the domain of a Locate Record tries to access a track
that is outside the primary track group.
File protected – Byte 1, bit 5 is also set.
7. A Write Data command with CKD conversion presented a channel end then
found that the transfer length factor did not match the formatted record length.
Invalid track format (byte 1, bit 1) is also set.
Byte 0, Bit 1–Intervention Required:
Shows that the addressed logical volume is
in one of the following states:
1. Not physically attached to the Internal Disk
2. Not available for use because the drive motor is off
3. The HDDs have been disabled via the Service Element.
Byte 0, Bit 3–Equipment Check:
Shows that an unusual hardware condition
originated in the Internal Disk. Sense bytes 1 through 23 define the conditions for
this bit.
Byte 0, Bit 4–Data Check:
Used for unrecoverable data check conditions on an
emulated 3380 logical volume. Sense bytes 1 through 23 define the conditions for
this bit.
Byte 0, Bit 7–Incomplete Domain:
This bit is set when an error that is normally
reported in 24-byte compatibility format is detected following the detection of an
Incomplete Domain condition (See “Byte 0, Bit 7–Incomplete Domain” on
page 6-4.)
Environmental data present (byte 2, bit 3) is also set.
