Sense Commands

Sense commands send error information and specific device information to the
channel.

Sense

Description:

The Sense command sends 32 bytes of sense data from the control

unit to the channel. See Chapter 5: "24-Byte Compatibility Sense Data" on page
5-1 and Chapter 6: "ECKD 32-Byte Sense Data" on page 6-1 describe the sense
data formats.

The control unit sends 32 bytes of sense information to the channel when it
receives a Sense command. If the Sense command is not preceded by a unit
check status for the same logical volume on the same channel interface, the 32
bytes are format 0, message 0, with sense bytes 0 through 3 equal to zero. The
remaining bytes contain zero, except for bytes 26–27 (configuration data).

Chaining and Restrictions:

This command is not valid in the domain of a Locate

Record or Locate Record Extended. If the Sense command is in a Locate Record
or Locate Record Extended domain, it is rejected with unit check status. The sense
data contains command reject with format 0, message 2.

A stand-alone Sense command issued during a contingent allegiance causes the
control unit to send the sense data to the host channel. However, due to its
privileged execution under this condition, any commands chained from a Sense
command executed during a contingent allegiance may cause unpredictable results.

See “Effect of Subsystem and Device State on Status Presented to Command” on
page 2-5 for the operation of this command when other subsystem and device
status conditions occur.

Ending Status:

The control unit presents channel end and device end status

when data transfer completes.
