Format Write Commands:

Establish a count area on the track, and format the

key and data areas of a record. These commands, if not followed immediately by
another format write command, erase the remaining portion of the track after writing
the last area of a record. The format write commands are:

Write Home Address
Write Record Zero
Write Count, Key, and Data
Write Count, Key, Data Next Track
Write Full Track

Erase.

Format write commands must be used to change the format of a record; that is, the
length of the key or data areas of a record.

Update Write Commands:

Update the key and data areas of an existing record

without affecting the format of that record or other records on the same track. The
update write commands are:
