During the initial calibration (see the 

Start-up and initial calibration

 chapter) the ven-

tilator calculates the compliance of the patient circuit and uses that information to 
determine tidal volume compensation. Based on this determination, the ventilator 
estimates the volume to be added (volume modes) or subtracted (pressure modes). 

The Volume 

Compensation

 option is active by default (YES option). In this case, a 

message appears in the Icosn and messages bar, warning that the compensation 
is  active.  To  deactivate  the  volume  compensation,  select  the  NO  option  on  the 
appropriate 

VENTILATORY ADJUNCTS 

line.

WARNING

• If the patient circuit configuration is chan

-

ged (hoses, humidifier, etc. being changed 

or  added)  the  volume  compensation  prior 

to  the  change  will  no  longer  be  valid.  The 

circuit  will  have  to  be  calibrated  again  to 

re-calculate  the  new  compensation  value. 

Otherwise, the patient may receive and ex

-

hale a volume that will not be reflected in the 

values displayed on the screen.

 

This is an option used if the kind of humidification used during ventilation is changed.

When the humidification system is changed, the temperature and humidity condi

-

tion of the gases are changed. Because of this, the volumes delivered and moni-
tored at BTPS condition must be corrected (body temperature, steam-saturated 
ambient pressure). 

The humidification system options are: 

• ACTIVE:  this  is  the  option  that  must  be  configured  when  an  active  humidifier/

heater is used. In this case, flow and volume readings are corrected to take into 
account the humidity and temperature generated by this kind of humidifier.

• PASSIVE: this is the option that must be configured if a passive humidifier is used 

(heat and moisture exchanger - HME).

• NONE (TECHNICAL): this is an option used by technical services. It is intended to be 

selected when no humidification is used and, therefore, no volume reading correc

-

tions are done. It must not be used while a patient is being provided ventilation.

WARNING

• Selecting  the  NONE  (TECHNICAL)  option 

implies disabling the BTPS correction. The

-

refore, it should never be used while a pa

-

tient is being provided ventilation. 

Auto-triggering may occur when there is a leak in the circuit because the leak could 

be interpreted as flow that has been diverted by patient requirements. Similarly, 

the ventilator may consider the depressurization generated by the loss of gases a 
result of the patient’s inspiratory effort if it is working with sensitivity by pressure. 

The purpose of leak compensation is to stabilize triggering sensitivity to avoid auto-
triggering occurrences. If there is a leak, it is measured by the ventilator and used 
as a point of reference to establish triggering criteria (inspiratory sensitivity).

The compensation operates up to certain leak levels (see Table 7-3).
