DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC WEIGHT OF
SEEDS
The values given in the distribution tables, expressed in kg/ha,
refer to a variety of seed with a set specific weight, expressed in
kg/dm³ (= kg/litre), shown in the same distribution table.
Before starting sowing, it is very important to check the specific
weight of the seed being used as well as carrying out the sowing
test.
A practical method for determining the specific weight of the seeds
is explained below.
Preparation of the "MEASURE"
If you do not have a graduated container to hand (e.g. jug with
LITRE mark), this chapter explains a practical method for obtaining
one.
You will need:
scales (min. capacity 0 to 2 kg); plastic bottle (min. capacity 1
litre); felt-tip pen ; scissors / cutter .
Put the empty plastic bottle on the scales, and zero it so that
"kg = 0.00".
Fill the bottle with water until the value "Kg = 1" is reached. Mark
the level of the water with the felt-tip pen and then empty the
bottle.
Cut the bottle along the mark you have just made and then
dry it.
You now have a 1-litre measure.
This practical method is based on the fact that 1 litre of water
weighs approx 1 kg ( H
2
O = 1 kg = 1 litre ).
Determination of "SPECIFIC WEIGHT"
Now it will be easy to determine the specific weight of the seeds.
Put the empty measure on the scales and zero it so that "kg =
0.00". Fill the measure you have made to the brim or, if you are
using a ready-made measure, fill it to the one LITRE level.
The value now shown on the scales is the specific weight
expressed in kg/litre (equal to kg/dm³).
