General product-specific terms and abbreviations
The following product-specific abbreviations are used in this document:
Term/abbreviation
Meaning
0 signal
0 V applied at the input, or output supplying 0 V.
1 signal
24 V applied at the input, or output supplying 24 V.
Terminating resistor
Resistor for minimising signal reflections at the fieldbus. Terminating resistors
must be installed or switched in at the end of bus segment cables.
Address switch
Used to set the internal module address.
AI
Analogue input
Analogue I/Os
Analogue inputs and outputs
AO
Analogue output
Application
Sum of the user programs
DI
Digital input
DO
Digital output
I/O module
Collective term for the modules that provide digital or analogue inputs and/or
outputs.
Ethernet
Physical protocol and network for connecting various devices.
Functional earth
Earthing whose sole purpose is to ensure the intended function of the electrical
equipment. Interference voltages are dissipated through the functional earth
that could otherwise lead to impermissible influences on a device.
Runtime system
Operating system add-on (software required to operate the system).
Optional modules
Optional modules are inserted in slots on the central module (max. 3) and pro-
vide special interfaces to the central module.
Peripheral modules
Peripheral modules can be inserted on the right side of the central module to
extend the functional scope. Signal generators and final control elements are
connected via I/O modules, for example.
Retain data
Data that is written to the memory of the control system by the application. This
is normally quantities, time information, etc. Retain data retains its value after
the device is switched off and back on. The next time the program is started,
work continues with the stored data. The data is not stored on the Compact
Flash memory card.
Status report
Files that the device can save for error analysis. These contain important infor-
mation on the status of the device at the time of the error. They can be read out
for service purposes.
