3) Heat exchanger
The expansion of pressurized gas
from fuel tank as it passes through
the pressure regulator causes
extremely low fuel temperatures.
Fuel metering component materials
downstream of the regulator are only
rated for -40°C (-40°F). In addition,
problems are encountered due to
freezing of moisture in the gas at
ambient (tank) temperatures around
0°C (32°F).
At the other extreme, natural gas temperatures above 45°C (113°F) can cause fuel metering
problems as well. With warm engine coolant, low fuel flow conditions, and/or low tank pressure
conditions, the heat exchanger also requires a hermostatic control device to avoid overheating
the gas. A heat exchanger design that is scaleable in capacity with one set of tooling is desirable.
4) Gas pressure regulator
The function of this pressure regulator
is to safely reduce the pressure of
compressed natural gas (CNG) from
the vehicle storage tanks (up to
250bar) to a preset level which allows
an engine fuel metering system to
properly control the gas.
This is accomplished by a large
pressure sensing element and
controlled force moving a control
valve to regulate gas flow in response
to downstream pressure levels.
