Appendix 5 Amplifier Gain Compression Measurement
371
➢
Linear power level
Refer to the input power of the amplifier in the linear gain (also known as the small signal gain) zone.
➢
Reference gain
Refer to the gain for reference in calculation of the compression level. The specific meaning varies from the
selected compression method.
➢
Compression level
Refer to the specific compression amount reduced relative to the reference gain. The value is generally 1dB.
➢
Target gain
Refer to the gain at the specific compression level (such as the 1dB compression). This item is not included in the
parameters of amplifier gain compression measurement, however, it is important to understand various
compression factors.
For example, perform the following settings of linear gain compression:
Linear gain (amplifier gain in the linear zone)=10.2dB
Compression level (fixed value)=1dB
Target gain=9.2dB
The target gain refers to the gain close to 9.2dB, which is searched in amplifier gain compression. The value may
not be exactly 9.2dB.
➢
Compression point
The gain measured at this point is the closest to the target gain. All compression parameter data are measured at this
point, including the input power, output power and gain of the compression point.
5.2.2 Parameter Curve of Gain Compression
In the amplifier gain compression curve:
1) The frequency value is displayed on the horizontal axis. The specified compression point is found by
measurement and calculation of the power sweep curve at each frequency point.
2) The specific parameters of the compression point are shown in the vertical axis. The linear S-parameters
displayed by the amplifier gain compression channel are used for measure the transmission and reflection
parameters of the amplifier in the linear zone.
5.2.3 Gain Compression Parameters
The parameters are determined based on the assumption that Port 1 is used for DUT input and Port 2 for DUT
output.
