4.1 Construction

4.2 Connection
During configuration leave the sensor head/sensor module
connected through the USB adapter to the PC (see
Fig. 4-1). Do not disconnect the cable during data
exchange!
To close the connection first turn the sensor head/sensor
module off using the menu or quit the Configuration Tool
and then disconnect the USB adapter.
Notes
– Before the adapter is connected, the
software and driver must be installed.
– A USB 2.0 (or higher) port is required for
optimal performance.
– The USB adapter should be connected
directly to the computer (USB hubs may
cause errors).

4.2.1 USB adapter pin assignment
NOTICE
If cables other than those supplied by Balluff are
used:
Voltage carrying pins on the SUB-D9 plug adapter
Pins 1, 5, and 9 are not required for the Configuration
Tool, but they carry voltage.

Do not connect pins 1, 5, and 9!
Damage to the equipment
The GND path of the USB adapter is not insulated. In
certain circumstances, the adapter can be damaged by
increased discharge currents via the magnetic encoder
system.

Observe the discharge currents in the machine
design.

For the sensor head/sensor module to be measured,
do not loop the ground (housing ground, shield) to
the laptop through the USB adapter, as this could
destroy the interface modules of the adapter.

If the sensor head is also grounded, an isolator
(available from specialist retailers) can be
interconnected.
There is an increased risk of discharge currents with
laptops without a ground level if a power supply unit is
connected (2-pin charging cable).

Use a permanent desktop computer.
