Frame,
front fork
and critical
components
• Check that the frame, front fork and
any stressed components do not
show any signs of cracks, scratches,
marks, damage, changes of colour
or make strange sounds.
• Wash the bike
thoroughly.
• Polish glossy
and painted
surfaces.
Brakes
• Make sure that the brake
mechanism is securely fastened on
the handlebars.
• Make sure the brake pads are
securely fastened and in the right
position.
• Check the braking performance of
the various braking methods.
• Make sure that the hand brake
wires are securely tightened over
the brake arms.
• Check that the wires are not caught
or damaged in any way.
• Check the brake
pads for wear
and tear.
• Check that
the brake arm
mounting bolts are
securely tightened.
• Check the wires
and housing for any
damage.*
• Lubricate
the brake arm
pivot points.
• Lubricate
the brake
levers pivot
points.
• Replace
the brake wires
and housing.*
• Lubricate
the brake arm
brackets.
Steering
• Make sure that the handlebars
are centred and sit securely on
the stem.
• Make sure that the stem is in line
with the front wheel and is securely
fastened.
• Check that
the steering
stem bearing is
not too loose or
gets stuck.*
• Check that
the bolts and nuts
of the stem are
securely tightened.
• Clean and
lubricate
the steering
stem bearing*.
Saddle and
Seat Post
• Check that the saddle is aligned
with the frame.
• Check that the saddle cannot be
twisted to the side or turned up/down.
• Make sure that the seat post is
securely fastened in the seat tube.
• Check that all
screws, bolts and
nuts are securely
tightened.
• Clean and
lubricate
the seat post
fasteners on
the seat tube.
Gears
• Check the gears for
proper functioning.
• Check the wires
and housing for any
damage.*
• Replace
the gear wires
and housing.*
Drivetrain
• Check the chain lubrication.
• Clean and lubricate
the chain.
• Check the chain
tension.
• Check that
the pedals are
securely fastened in
the crank arms.
• Check that
the bottom
bracket is not
loose or is
sluggish.*
• Clean and
lubricate
the screws on
the pedals.
• Check the pedal
bearings.
• Check the chain
and chain
sprocket for
wear and tear.*
Wheels
• Check that the wheels sit straight
and are tightly screwed onto
the fork dropouts.
• Wipe the rims with a soft, damp cloth.
• Check the tyres for cracks and cuts.
• Check the air pressure in the tyres.
• Check that the spokes are not
damaged or loose.*
• Check
the straightness of
the wheels.*
• Check the rims
for wear
and tear.*
• Check that
the hub of
each wheel is
not loose or is
sluggish.*
• Clean and
lubricate
the wheel
bearings.*
• Check
the tension of
the spokes.
