The servers are connected to each other via an Ethernet backplane provided by
connecting each server’s second Ethernet port (logical name: eth1) to a port on an
Ethernet switch. This switch must be dedicated to the stack (have no other devices
connected to it). The servers have a private backplane dedicated to communication
among them (signaling, dynamic stack maintenance, voice streams, and replication). Each
server is also connected to a public LAN (usually a corporate LAN behind a firewall) via
their primary (eth0) port. The primary port accommodates all application-oriented IP
traffic, including applications, management, and VoIP streams to clients.
Note:
Each stacked server is managed separately; it must be explicitly configured
and generates its own alerts and call logs.
All members of a stack are generally co-located, as shown in Figure A-1. However, stacks
may be geographically distributed as well – Remote Sites. Please consult directly with
Alcatel-Lucent if contemplating such a design.
