Bandwidth requirements on the primary LAN
To preserve voice quality, Alcatel-Lucent recommends that any Ethernet interface
carrying voice traffic be planned for no more than 30% utilization of the network’s
nominal capacity (for example, 333 Mb/sec of a 1Gb/sec port). Therefore, a
100Mbit/second Ethernet interface can be roughly sized to accommodate up to 300
simultaneous voice streams (30Mb/sec), assuming there is no non-ACS traffic on that
LAN. However, the primary LAN interface often carries other traffic in addition to My
Teamwork; thus, in most environments it is safer to plan for 1Gbit primary Ethernet
interfaces.
Note:
Allow bandwidth of 100Kbit/sec per call. (for example, a 10Mb Trunk with
30% utilization would be 3x10 DS0=30Mb bandwidth)
Table B-1
Factors that Affect Bandwidth Consumption
VoIP data
Voice data requires 100kbit/second per voice stream (using the
default G.711 codec). The number of bidirectional voice streams
required for each call is usually equal to the number of
participants in the call. (Note that although conference calls
may contain a large number of participants, each participant
receives only a single mixed, aggregate voice stream.)
Occasionally, extra voice streams may be required, for example,
if a call is being recorded.
Application Sharing
It consumes as much or more bandwidth per user as VoIP data.
Application sharing requires 64 to 256 kbit/second or more per
user depending on a number of variables. The major parameters
affecting bandwidth for application sharing are the type of
applications shared, the desktop resolution, the color depth, and
the window size (if only a window is shared). Below is an
example determining application sharing bandwidth at the
server. Note 80 Kbps is used as an estimate for static business
applications at 1024x768 and is multiplied by 2 to account for 16
bit color (since 80 Kbps assumes 8 bit color). More screen
intensive applications or higher screen resolutions would require
correspondingly more bandwidth.
