Add Selected Data to Model
This function is very similar to the previous function. Again, you will select two or more range
or model files (or regions of files) and all selected files must be aligned. However, at least one
file must be a model file and, rather than creating a new model, the selected files will all be
added to one of the selected model files.
To use the function, select one or more aligned range and/or model files in the Scene Tree. (
Ctrl
to make multiple selections.) Then select the function from the Edit menu. If more than one
model file is selected, you will be asked to specify the model file to which the data will be
added. Again, Target Triangles in Model will be used.
This function can be used to incrementally add to a model. Begin by creating a model from a
single file or region of a file. Then, select the model and a new region or file and select
Add
Selected Data to Model.
Continue in this way to build up a model from many different sets of
data.
To keep this new model it must be saved, with the same or a different name, using
Save File
or
Save File As
.

Create Simplified Model
The
Create Simplified Model
function is used for creating the highest quality models. It
produces these results by doing the following:
•
It begins with full-resolution range files – with or without color.
•
It performs ‘intelligent triangle reduction’ of the data – reducing the number of points in
such a way as to maintain the detail of the model.
•
It maintains the full resolution of the color or grey scale – even while reducing the
number of points in the underlying model – and creates a new model.
The only drawback to this approach is the computer time needed for triangle reduction – from
tens of minutes to an hour or more for each file. However, this step requires no user intervention
and even can be run overnight.
To use this function, you select a range or model file from the Scene Tree and select
Create
Simplified Model
from the Edit menu. If it is a range file with data selected, you can choose to
create a simplified model from the whole file or just from the selected data. You are also asked
to specify Small, Medium, or Large; this specifies the size of the resulting model. Larger files
have somewhat more triangles and more detail. (A typical 360° scan will produce a large file
with approximately 800,000 triangles, a medium file with approximately 500,000, and a small
file with less than 400,000.) You will also be asked to name the resulting model. The default
name has ‘_reduced’ appended to the name of the input file.
If you would like to create simplified models from several files at once, you can select them all
in the Scene Tree. You will have the opportunity to name each of them before the computing
