COARSE FUEL FILTER
The coarse fuel filter is a full-flow sump-type filter.
The coarse fuel filter is equipped with (see Fig. 32) a water
separator
7
(water sump), a manual fuel priming pump
5
, a fuel heater
6
and a level sensor
1
.
The coarse fuel filter is installed in the low-pressure fuel line
between the fuel tank and the ECU fuel feed union. Due to its multi-
layer structure the filter separates water and particles from the flowing
diesel fuel. The separated water and particles are collected in the sump
7
under the replaceable filter
2
. The water is drained through the drain
hole with a threaded plug
8
.
The level sensor
1
is used to check the filling level of the water
sump .
The manual pump
5
allows for easy and fast removal of air
from the filter and fuel system, e.g. after maintenance.
During the vehicle operation in cold season the fuel filter may
become clogged due to formation of paraffin in the diesel fuel. This
process is reversible and depends on the fuel quality.
