Shifting Gears
The forward gears in the Indigo transmission are synchronised to allow easy and
smooth shifting. When shifting to another gear, always depress the clutch pedal
fully to disengage the transmission, shift into gear, and the release the clutch
pedal smoothly.
Reverse gear is located opposite of fifth gear in the shift pattern. An interlock is
provided to prevent an accidental shift into reverse while the vehicle is moving.
When shifting into reverse, stopping the vehicle and depressing the clutch pedal
for five (5) seconds will allow easy engagement of the reverse gear.
For maximum vehicle pickup, follow the recommended upshift speeds shown in
the vehicle upshift and downshift table shown in the table at right.
To avoid overworking the engine, downshift as necessary when travelling up a
steep grade or while in traffic. Do not lug the engine. While slowing to a stop or
travelling down a steep grade, shift into a lower gear to use the engine’s braking
power to slow the vehicle down and prolong brake life.
STARTING & DRIVING – Shifting Gears
CAUTION
Avoid releasing the clutch abruptly. Damage to the clutch or
transmission may occur from sudden de-clutching.
Do not drive with your foot resting on the clutch pedal. Doing so
will shorten the life of the clutch.
