OPERATING YOUR VEHICLE
Emergency Shifting out of "P" (Park)
Vehicles with an automatic transmission
have an electrically operated park-lock
feature. If the vehicle's battery is dis-
charged, or there is some other electrical
failure, the automatic transmission can-
not be shifted out of Park in the normal
way. Jump starting may correct the con-
dition. If not, follow the procedure
described below. This procedure will
permit shifting the transmission out of
Park.
If you are unable to shift the transmis-
sion out of Park in the normal manner:
1) Be sure the parking brake is firmly
applied.
2) Remove the access hole cover a; by
unfastening the screw with a
Phillips Screwdriver.
3) If the engine is running, stop the
engine.
4) Make sure the key is in the "ON" or
"ACC" position.
5) Move the return plate rearward
until it stops.
6) While holding the return plate in
the rearward position, shift the trans-
mission lever to the desired position.
7) Replace the access hole cover and
the screw
This procedure is for emergency use
only. If repeated use of this procedure is
necessary, or the procedure does not
work as described, take the vehicle to
your dealer for repair.

Starting Off
To start off, push in the clutch pedal
and shift into 1st gear. After releasing
the parking brake, gradually release the
clutch. When you hear a change in the
engine's sound, slowly press the ac-
celerator while continuing to gradually
release the clutch.
Shifting
All forward gears are synchronized, which
provides for quiet, easy shifting. Always
push in the clutch pedal fully before shif-
ting gears. For the best fuel economy and
driveability, upshift and downshift as
shown in the charts below.
