HDI RECOVERY PROCEDURES (For VK version)
7 – 1
CHAPTER 7. HDI RECOVERY PROCEDURES (For VK version)
1. GENERAL
This manual describes the procedures to recover the UP-5900 hard
disk image (HDI) to factory setup state.
There are two ways to recover for the UP-5900.
1
Recovery by CD boot with CD drive (SCSI-connection) which has
bootable BIOS
2
Recovery by FD boot with bootable FD, USB-CD or SCSI-connec-
tion CD
Refer to “3. Recovery procedures with SCSI card/USB-CD device” to
select which way to recover.
Procedure
1
is simple to perform, because only Recovery CD-ROM is
used for recovering.
If CD booting is not available, use procedure
2
, In this case, a boot FD
must be prepared by referring to “5. Creating bootable FD for recovery-
ing HDI.”
2. REQUIRED ITEMS
• SCSI card + CD-ROM drive or USB-CD
(The driver must support DOS and CD-ROM drive must be able to
read CD-R format.
For USB-CD, it is recommended to use one with an AC adapter.)
• UP-5900 Product Recovery CD-ROM
• Keyboard
• 1.44MB floppy disk (Not required for CD booting)
3. RECOVERY PROCEDURES WITH SCSI
CARD / USB-CD DEVICE
*1: The boot area of “UP-5900 Product Recovery CD-ROM” includes
following ASPI drivers which are included in Windows98.
ASPI8DOS.SYS (Ver.1.32S)
ASPI8U2.SYS (Ver.1.00S)
Above drivers can be used for PCI I/F SCSI card from Adaptec
(AHA-2940AU and AHA-2910 series), but cannot be used for AHA-
2930U/AHA-2930U2. To use AHA-2930U/AHA-2930U2, driver file
ASPI8DOS.SYS (Ver.1.35 or later) /ASPI8U2.SYS (Ver.1.03 or
later) is required. (According to Adaptec support information)
*2: Checked device: CD-210PU by TEAC
4. PRECAUTIONS
• Use of the UP-5900 Product Recovery CD-ROM is limited to the UP-
5900. Never use it for other POS or PC.
• All files in the UP-5900 Product Recovery CD-ROM must be used
only for recovering UP-5900 hard disk image. Modification of any file
in the UP-5900 Product Recovery CD-ROM that is not described in
this manual is forbidden.
• SCSI or USB-CD to be used must support DOS drivers.
• Before executing recovery, be sure to back up all necessary files to
other media. When recovery is executed, all data in hard disk will be
deleted.
• When a SCSI device with bootable BIOS is used, system will boot
from SCSI device instead of UP-5900 FD/HDD due to boot device pri-
ority. To avoid this, boot from FD first, and then insert UP-5900 Prod-
uct Recovery CD-ROM into SCSI CD drive.
• Be careful to avoid breaker OFF or power failure during the recovery
procedure.
• When using USB-CD, it is recommended to use AC adapter for stable
power supply. Depending on device, it may be possible that power
supply from USB bus power (5V) is not enough to perform stable
readouts, resulting an error.
5. CREATING BOOTABLE FD FOR
RECOVERING HDI
(1) Create a Windows98 startup disk.
Open [Startup Disk] tab in [Add/Remove Programs] from the control
panel, and click [Create Disk] button. Follow the instructions shown
on the display.
(2) Delete the following files from “Windows98 startup disk” created in
the previous step.
