2. Check that the throttle operates smoothly
when the throttle grip is turned from the
fully closed position to the fully open

when the remote control lever is moved
from the F or R to the fully open position.

TIP:
The shift lever can be operated only when
the throttle grip is in the fully closed position.

Checking the outboard motor
mounting height
1. Check that the anti-cavitation plate
a
is
between the bottom of the boat
b
and a
maximum of 25 mm (1 in)
c
below it. If
the mounting height is too high, cavita-
tion will occur and propulsion will
decrease. Besides, the engine speed will
increase abnormally and cause the
engine to overheat. If the mounting
height is too low, water resistance will
increase, which will decrease engine effi-
ciency and performance.
TIP:
The optimum mounting height depends on
the combination of the boat and outboard
motor. To determine the optimum mounting
height, test run the outboard motor at differ-
ent heights.
2. Check that the clamp brackets are
secured using the clamp bolts.
Checking the PTT system (PTT
model)
1. Check that the outboard motor tilts up
and down smoothly when operating the
PTT switch.
2. Check that there is no abnormal noise
produced when the outboard motor is
tilted up or down.
3. Check that there is no interference with
cables, hoses, or leads when the tilted-
up outboard motor is steered.
Checking the steering system (tiller
handle model)
1. Check the steering friction for proper
adjustment.
TIP:
• To increase the friction, move the steering
lock lever in direction

• To decrease the friction, move the steering
lock lever in direction

2. Adjust the friction adjusting nut 1 until
steering operates properly. WARNING!
Do not overtighten the friction
adjuster. If there is too much resis-
tance, it could be difficult to steer,
which could result in an accident.
