Display and alter Variation/Deviation
Deviation
A heading display from a compass may be affected by permanent magnetic parts of
steel, lines with direct current flow or magnetic soft iron parts in that manner, that the
heading information is faulty.
With correction values (deviation values) this fault can be corrected.
This correction value is entered via the Operation Unit to the Distribution Unit and is
used to correct the magnetic heading information.
An indication if it is possible to apply or to amend a devi-
ation table is the soft key field “Deviation”.
If there is no therm “Deviation “ in this field, than the func-
tion of a deviation table is available (this function reflect a
higher development status. At Distribution Unit with a lower
development status the field has the therm “Deviation”. In
this case single correction value to each heading have to
be entered according to section 4.1.1.1).
At Distribution Unit with the function of a deviation table,
see section 4.1.1.2.
Variation
Because of the magnetic north pole is not identical to the geographic pole, there is a
declination, this declination is designated with variation.
This variation varying and it is possible to take out this alteration out of a sea chart
(depending location).
This value has to be entered as a single value. It is stored in the Distribution Unit and
used to correct the magnetic heading information.
