8.14. SHORT FIELD TAKEOFF
Short field take-off is a demanding procedure, utilized when it is necessary to get off the ground in the
minimum distance and sometimes to climb relatively steeply to clear obstacles.
• Wing Flaps – 15°.
• Brakes – APPLY.
• Throttle – FULL POWER.
• Brakes – RELEASE.
• Elevator Control – SLIGHTLY TAIL LOW.
• Climb Speed – 54 KIAS (100 IAS) - until all obstacles are cleared.
• Wing Flaps – RETRACT slowly after reaching 65 KIAS (120 IAS).
8.15. SHORT FIELD LANDING
Short-field landing is a demanding procedure, utilized when the length of the runway or landing area is
relatively short, or where obstacles in close vicinity to the landing approach limit the available landing area.
• Airspeed – 60-70 KIAS (110 – 130 IAS) - flaps UP.
• Wing Flaps – 40°.
• Airspeed – MAINTAIN 54 KIAS (100 IAS).
• Power – REDUCE to idle as obstacle is cleared.
• Touchdown – MAIN WHEEL FIRST.
• Brakes – APPLY HEAVILY.
• Wing Flaps – RETRACT
8.16. SOFT FIELD TAKEOFF
When taking off in a soft field (grass, gravel, snow), it all comes down to one goal: transferring your
aircraft's weight from wheels to wings as soon as possible. By lifting off as soon as possible, you eliminate
drag from grass, sand, mud snow, etc. And that's important because excessive drag on a runway can
dramatically increase your takeoff roll.
• Wing Flaps - 15˚
• Elevator Control - FULL AFT DURING TAXI & INITIAL TAKEOFF ROLL
• Throttle - FULL OPEN
• Elevator Control - AS NOSE WHEEL LIFTS OFF, REDUCE ELEVATOR SLIGHTLY
• As aircraft becomes airborne - LEVEL OFF IN GROUND EFFECT TO ACCELERATE TO Vx
• Climb Speed - 65 KIAS (120 IAS)
CAUTION!
ALL LANDING SPEEDS WITH 15 ° / 30 ° / 40 ° FLAPS MUST BE INCREASED BY 5.4 KNOTS
(10 KM/H) IN TURBULENT WEATHER.
