7.4.1
FLYING WITHOUT ENGINE POWER (GLIDING FLIGHT)
•
If the engine fails, it is necessary to maintain best glide speed – 65 knot (120 km/h)
7.5. PRECAUTIONARY LANDING
Precautionary landing is generally made in case of loss of orientation, worsening of weather, low fuel,
engine vibration or engine roughness is present and/or sudden incapacitation of pilot. Always follow the
recommendations listed below:
•
When engine vibration or engine roughness is presented, do not wait until the engine stops and
instead perform a precautionary landing. A precautionary landing approach should be used whenever
power is still available, but a complete power failure is considered imminent. Maintain a higher and
closer pattern than normal in attempt to remain in gliding distance of the intended touchdown point.
•
Choose suitable landing area depending on wind direction and terrain/cover
•
If possible, report your intention to land
•
Apply “take-off” flaps, maintain speed 65 knots
•
Fly above right side of selected landing area in the direction of planned landing, at a height of 150 ft
to estimate the area condition, obstacles and to determine exact landing direction.
•
Carefully check the area.
•
Climb a little, maintaining ground visibility if conditions permit, fly small left circuit.
•
Perform a normal approach and landing
Side slipping the aircraft by cross controlling the rudder and ailerons will increase the rate of descent
both with and without flaps. If a crosswind exists, place the lower wing into the wind.
After touchdown:
