Residential-Style Refrigerator Operation Overview
This article provides a general overview of how a residential-style refrigerator operates.
Residential-style refrigerators are the most popular option installed in Newmar coaches. The refrigerator operates on 120
volt AC power and uses freon and a compressor to keep your food cold and fresh. The power may be supplied by the
electrical hookup at the campsite, generator power or (in most coaches) an inverter with a charged house battery bank.
For models with a built-in ice maker, a pressurized water supply is required. In order for the ice maker to operate, you
must have water in the fresh tank and have the water pump turned on, or your coach must be connected to city water
supply.
When placing items on the racks and in the bins, leave enough space for air to flow throughout the entire refrigerator
cabinet.
All models are equipped with a means to latch and secure the doors for a tight seal and to prevent the doors from
opening during transit. Become familiar with the latch operation and always lock prior to traveling.
IMPORTANT:
•
Turning the Temperature Control to OFF stops cooling in the refrigerator and freezer compartments, but it does not
disconnect the refrigerator from the power supply.
•
The Temperature Control regulates the temperature in both the refrigerator and freezer compartments. Settings to the
left of the mid-setting make the temperature less cold. Settings to the right of the mid-setting make the temperature
colder.
•
Wait 24 hours before you put food into your refrigerator. If you add food before the refrigerator has cooled completely,
your food may spoil.
NOTE: Adjusting the Temperature Control to a higher
(colder) setting will not cool the compartments any faster.
•
The mid-settings should be correct for normal household
usage. The controls are set correctly when milk or juice
is as cold as you like and when ice cream is firm.
•
If the temperature is too warm or too cold in the
refrigerator or freezer, before adjusting the controls, first
make sure the air vents are not blocked.

Provides basic operation instructions for a Whirlpool Refrigerator with Top Freezer (Model: WRT111SFDM).
Using The Controls
When you plug in the refrigerator for the first time, set the Temperature Control to the Recommended
setting. Temperature Control adjustments range from MIN (least cold) to MAX (coldest).
The Airflow control is located on the back wall of the freezer. It regulates the amount of air flowing
between the freezer and the refrigerator compartments. When you plug in the refrigerator for the first
time, turn the Airflow control to the Recommended setting.
