Setup and Operation 2-5
SETTING SYSTEM PARAMETERS
This subsection describes the utilities that allow you to view and change system
configuration information and control special features of the system. The utilities include:
n
ROM-based Setup utility — use this utility to set system parameters such as date,
time, and system security features. You can also use the utility for configuring
optional PCI and IDE devices or to check or change the video device.
n
EISA Configuration utility (ECU) — use this utility when adding, moving,
removing, or configuring any optional EISA, PCI, Plug and Play ISA, or non-
Plug and Play ISA expansion boards.
n
SCSI Select™ utility — use this utility to check the settings of your installed
SCSI-2 devices or to configure the system for any optional SCSI devices that you
may install.
NOTE
: Your system ships from the factory
with the correct system parameters for your
configuration. Unless you add optional
hardware, you do not need to run the Setup,
ECU, or SCSI Select utilities to operate your
system.
However, you might wish to run Setup to set
features that customize your system, such as
time, date, and security. The system ships from
the factory with the correct system configuration
for each system.
System configuration information is stored in nonvolatile memory (NVRAM). Nonvolatile
memory in the system is a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) chip,
backed up by the RTC/battery module on the system board. The RTC battery supplies
continuous power to the CMOS memory and maintains configuration information when
system power is off.
NOTE
:
NEC recommends that you print out or
write down your current Setup parameters and
store the information in a safe place. This lets
you restore your system to the current parameters
if you ever need to replace the RTC/battery
module (see Section 4 for replacement
procedures).
