1-28 Technical Information
Indicator Panel
The indicator panel is attached to the front panel and contains the power lamp, hard disk
drive busy lamp, and reset button. The indicator panel attaches to the system board using
connector J4 (reset connector), J12 (power lamp connector), and J11 (hard disk drive busy
lamp connector).
Power Supply
The power supply is mounted inside the system unit. It supplies power to the system board
(+5V, +12V, and -12V), and storage devices. In turn, the system board supplies power to
the keyboard, mouse, and any installed expansion boards. (-5V is provided to EISA adapter
boards, but this voltage is not used by the system board.) Three connectors connect the
power supply to the system board (connectors J17, J21, and J31). There are also connectors
available for the six possible storage devices.
A fan inside the power supply (at connectors J6 and J7) provides proper ventilation for the
system. The power supply provides 260W of power. Power requirements and specifications
for the power supply are provided in Appendix A, Specifications.
Diskette Drive
The computer supports up to two diskette drives. Image P90E and Image P100E systems
ship with one standard diskette drive that connects to the system board by means of a
single-connector ribbon cable. To install a second, optional diskette drive, a single ribbon
cable with two drive connectors must be installed in place of the single-connector cable.
The dual-connector cable option is available from NEC (see Section 4). The system refers
to the diskette drives as A and B. Drive A is for the first drive, B is for the second optional
diskette drive. Typically, both diskette drives are terminated. See Section 3, Options, for
instructions on installing an optional 5 1/4-inch diskette drive (or 3 1/2-inch diskette drive
in a 5 1/4-inch form factor). Specifications for the diskette drives are provided in Appendix
A, Specifications.
Hard Disk Drive
The system provides two fast PCI-bus IDE interface connectors on the system board. The
system board supports one or two devices on each IDE connector. The system also
provides one SCSI connector supporting up to five internal and 7 external devices (hard
disk drives, tape back-up drives, and CD ROM readers) using the PCI local bus Fast
SCSI-2 host adapter.
The system unit provides two internal storage slots (one 1-inch height and one 1.6-inch
height) for 3 1/2-inch hard disk drives. When configurations are shipped with a hard disk
drive, one of these slots is occupied. Three accessible 5 1/4-inch device (1.6-inch height)
storage slots also available for optional devices. See Section 3, Options, for installing an
optional hard disk drive. Specifications for the hard drives are provided in Appendix A,
Specifications.
