13.3.17.3 Bridge
A bridge is a device connecting two networks using either the same or different Data Link Layer (DLL) protocol. Bridging
is a forwarding technique used in networks. Bridging makes no assumption about where a particular address is located.
It relies on the flooding and examination of source addresses in received packet headers to locate unknown devices. Once
a device is located, its location is stored in a table to avoid broadcasting to that device again. Bridging is limited by its
dependency on flooding, and is used in local area networks only. A bridge and an access point are very much alike, as an
access point can be viewed as a bridge with a number of ports.
The
Bridge
screen provides details about the Integrate Gateway Server (IGS), which is a router connected to an access
point. The IGS performs the following:
• Issues IP addresses
• Throttles bandwidth
• Permits access to other networks
• Times out old logins
The Bridging screen also provides information about the
Multicast Router
(MRouter), which is a router program that
distinguishes between multicast and unicast packets and how they should be distributed along the Multicast Internet.
Using an appropriate algorithm, a multicast router instructs a switching device what to do with the multicast packet.
To view an access point’s Bridge statistics:
1. Select the
Statistics
menu from the Web UI.
2. Select
System
from the navigation pane (on the left-hand side of the screen), expand the default node and select an
access point for statistical observation.
3. Select
Network
and expand the menu to reveal its sub menu items
.
4. Select
Bridge
. The
Details
tab displays by default.
