Install the two dowel pins in the cylinder and install a
new head gasket, making sure the “fire ring” is facing
upward.

Place the correct cylinder head in position on the
cylinder. Front and rear cylinder heads are different and
are marked with an “F” or “R” for identification.
Misalignment of the cylinder head can occur when
it is not fully seated over the locating dowels.
Ensure that the head is completely seated before
installing the head bolts.

Thoroughly clean the head bolts before installation.
Friction caused by debris and grime can result in false
torque readings. Use a 3/8"-16 bottom/chasing tap
(preferred) or bottom/cutting tap to clean the internal
threads of the bolts. (DO NOT use a starting tap; it will
not remove debris from the deep reaches of the head
bolts.)
Next, clean out all oil and debris from the internal
threads using a can of carburetor/brake cleaner fitted
with a spray tube. Fully insert the spray tube into the
bolt and work out from the base of the threads. Use
compressed air to final clean and dry the threads.
Apply a light coating of engine oil to the threads and
flanges of the head bolts and loosely install the two
short and two long head bolts at the proper locations.
Using a 1/2" 12-point socket and torque wrench, tighten
the head bolts incrementally in three steps following a
diagonal cross-head pattern as follows:
1. Lightly snug all head bolts in sequence.
2. Tighten head bolts to 4–6 foot-pounds in sequence.
3. Tighten head bolts to 13–15 foot-pounds in sequence.
4. Turn head bolts an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn)
± 2 degrees in sequence.

Install new gaskets and then place the intake manifold
in position on the cylinder heads. Install the mounting
screws with blue threadlock and tighten to
16–20 foot-pounds.
