Note:
The SAN768B-2 must be removed from the fabric and powered off to
perform this procedure. Contact IBM Support if you have any questions
about whether the chassis requires replacement.
Verifying necessity of replacement
Before replacing the chassis, verify that the replacement is necessary. Ensure that
the components are firmly seated when troubleshooting. Contact IBM if you have
any questions about whether the chassis should be replaced.
Any of the following events might indicate that the chassis requires replacement:
v
Visible mechanical damage to the chassis, including damage to sheet metal or
blade guides that prevents correct installation of a component.
v
Bent or damaged connectors on the main backplane (the surface inside the
chassis to which the various blades connect)
v
One or more SAN768B-2 components (such as a power supply, blower assembly,
port blade, CP blade, or WWN card) do not function properly even after the
component is replaced.
v
Intermittent FAULTY codes for blades. Re-seat the blade and visually inspect the
top ejector stiffening rail for possible wear or damage. It is important that the
blade ejector handles not slip out during blade installation. If this happens, it is
usually due to excessive wear or damage to the top ejector stiffening rail.
v
The
psShow
or
fanShow
commands continue to show a faulty component even
though the component has been replaced.
v
The
slotShow
command continues to show a faulty processor, core switch, or
port blade even though the blade has been replaced.
Preparing for a chassis replacement
Use the following information to help prepare for a chassis replacement.
Attention:
Refer to “Safety notices and labels” on page xiii before performing any
removal or installation procedures.
Time required
The chassis replacement procedure takes approximately 3 hours to complete.
Items required
The following items are required for the chassis replacement procedure:
v
ESD grounding strap.
v
ESD grounding pads for protecting all blades and WWN cards
v
Serial cable and workstation computer with a terminal emulator application
(such as HyperTerminal for Windows systems or TIP for Solaris systems),
required only if serial console session used.
v
Lifting tool (see “Ordering the lift tool” on page 12).
v
A surface to place the old chassis on, such as a second lift or the pallet originally
provided with the old chassis.
v
Torque wrench with #2 Phillips screwdriver tip (if switch is installed in a
cabinet).
v
#2 slotted screwdriver.
