If you must leave your vehicle with
the engine running, hold the
regular brake pedal down after
you have shifted into
P
(Park) and
try to move the shift lever out of
the Park position without first pull
ing it toward you. If you can, then
the shift lever was not locked in
Park.

CAUTION
When you leave your vehicle,
be sure the shift lever is fully in
P
(Park) and the park brake is
firmly applied. Don't try to shift
to
P
(Park) if your vehicle is
moving.
Make sure that the transfer case
is in a drive gear and not in
N
(Neutral). Otherwise, the
vehicle will be free to roll even if
the shift lever is in
P
(Park).
Section 3
Torque lock
If you park your vehicle on a hill,
make sure to apply the park brake
first before shifting into
P
(Park).
Otherwise, there will be excessive
pressure on the parking mecha
nism which will make it difficult to
shift out of
P
(Park). Before
moving, always shift out of
P
(Park) then release the park brake.
If you cannot shift out of
P
(Park),
you may need to have another
vehicle push yours a little up-hill.
This takes some of the pressure
from the parking mechanism in
the transmission, so you can pull
the shift lever out of
P
(Park).
