Chapter 8 - Caterpillar Engine and Related Systems

2.
Cooling System Description
2a. The liquid-cooled engine is mid-mounted,
under the cargo box.
2b. The radiator is mounted horizontally, at the
front of the vehicle. It is protected by the
hood.
2c. An electric fan forces air through the radia-
tor when the coolant in the radiator
exceeds a pre-set temperature.
See Figure 8.49.
•
Collectively, the radiator and the fan that drives
air through it constitute the cooling matrix.
2d. Metal coolant pipes connect the engine to
the radiator. See Figure 8.50.
2e. A thermostat on the engine regulates the
flow of coolant between the engine and
the radiator.
2f. A belt-driven water pump circulates cool-
ant between the engine and the radiator
when the thermostat is open.
See Figure 8.51.
2g. Because the elevation of the system is low
in the middle (coolant pipes under the
passenger’s seat) and high at both ends
(engine and radiator), it is necessary to
vent the air out of two points in the sys-
tem.
•
The vent point at the front of the system is the
radiator cap.
