14.
Re-connect the bottom of the spring and damper
unit to the control arm, tightening the nut to a
torque of 42-26 ft-lbs (60-88 N-m). If the locking
feature of the nut has worn, replace the nut or
apply a small amount of threadlocking com-
pound such as Loctite® 242 (blue) to the
threads.
15.
Secure the ball joint stud to the hub assembly,
tightening the nut to a torque of 22-28 ft-lbs (30-
38 N-m).
16.
Install the wheel, and tighten the lug nuts to a
torque of 75 ft-lbs (102 N-m).
17.
Lower the vehicle to the ground.
18.
Check alignment, and test drive the vehicle in a
safe area before returning it to service.
Upper Control Arm (and bushings)
Refer to the INSPECTION section of this chapter
for information on when to replace control arm
bushings.
1.
Separate the upper ball joint from the hub
assembly as described in the Upper Ball Joint
section of this chapter.
2.
Disconnect the bottom of the spring and damper
unit from the upper control arm using a pair of 3/
4” wrenches. See Figure 4.39.
2a. Support the upper control arm
2b. Loosen the nut and bolt that hold the top of
the spring and damper unit to the frame (1
turn).
2c. Remove the clamp that holds the brake
line to the upper control arm using a 3/8”
wrench.
2d. Swing the spring and damper unit out of
the way, and turn the steering wheel to
fully extend the tie rod on the side being
repaired. This will provide the maximum
range of available motion.
