8f. Reverse the procedure to install the
starter. Tighten the bolts that hold the
starter to the engine block to a torque of
135 in. lb. (15.3 N-m).
NOTE:
It is not absolutely necessary to remove
the splash shield for starter motor removal, but it
does allow the technician to see the bolts and
inspect the bolt holes, ring gear, and mounting
surface.
9.
Cooling Shroud
: Unlike previous V-twin pow-
ered Cub Cadet utility vehicles, the cooling
shroud can be removed from the engine while
the engine is in place in the vehicle. This pro-
vides access to:
•
The ignition modules and wiring
•
The flywheel (ring gear and alternator rotor)
•
The alternator stator and charging system wires
•
Cylinder cooling fins
•
The intake manifold bolts
9a. To remove the cooling shroud:
See Figure 7.16.
•
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to pre-
vent accidental arcing using an 8mm wrench.
•
Remove the splash shield as described in sec-
tion 7 of this chapter.
•
Close the choke by pulling-up the choke knob.
The knob is located left of the driver’s seat.
•
Remove the air filter cover and clean the hous-
ing surrounding the air filter element.
•
Remove the wing nut that holds the air filter ele-
ment cover, then lift off the element and cover.
9b. Remove the screws that hold the air filter
housing and element cover bracket using
an 8mm wrench. See Figure 7.17.
9c. Remove and discard the speed nuts that
hold the cooling fan guard to the fan.
NOTE:
Replace the speed nuts with new ones
on installation.
CAUTION:
Disconnect and ground the spark
plug wires (high tension leads) before removing
any hardware that may cause the crankshaft to
turn while it is being removed.
9d. Remove the 4 shoulder screws that hold
the cooling fan to the flywheel using an
8mm wrench. See Figure 7.18.
