12.
From this point, any repairs made to the axle can
be done on the bench, or it may be replaced as a
complete unit. See Figure 3.61.
NOTE: C.V. joint boot kits:
•
The Rzeppa boot kit that will service the outer
C.V. joint boot can be ordered as part # 731-
05083.
•
The DOJ boot kit that services the inner C.V.
joint boot can be ordered as part# 731-05082.
•
Installing the C.V. joint boot kits will require the
use of a pair of Oetiker clamp pliers. Oetiker
clamp pliers are locally available.
13.
Assembly notes:
•
Inspect the splines and shaft seals before install-
ing the axle. Make any needed repairs before
reassembly.
•
Apply anti-seize compound to the splined joints
on assembly and to the bolts connecting the hub
to the upper control arm.
•
Replace any worn components before reassem-
bly.
Pay particular attention to the bushings that sup-
port the hub.
If the self-locking feature of any of the nuts is
worn, replace the nuts or use thread locking
compound such as Loctite 242 (blue).
Replace the cotter pin with a new 1-7/8” X 1/8”
(47.5 X 3.2mm) cotter pin
•
Reverse the removal procedure to install the
rear drive shaft.
NOTE:
Tightening the nuts and bolts that hold
the control arm to the frame locks the control
arm bushings. Lower the vehicle to the ground
so that the suspension is loaded before tighten-
ing the nuts fully. This will prevent pre-loading of
the bushings.
•
Check the level of the gear lube in the differen-
tial. Top-up if needed before running the vehicle.
•
Tighten the hardware to the torques specified in
the accompanying table:
14.
Test-run the vehicle in a safe area before return-
ing it to service.
