NOTE
: If the Genius is left out of the Temp-Mate for more than one minute after taking a temperature, it
enters a power saving SLEEP mode. If the display says "USE NEW COVER" even though one is installed,
press the RELEASE button and reinstall the probe cover to take the next temperature.
2. Setting the Equivalence
Before tympanic thermometry, clinical temperatures were measured orally, rectally, or in special cases, with an
indwelling Swan-Ganz catheter. If a patient's temperature was measured simultaneously with each of these
methods, three different absolute temperatures would be determined. Based on clinical studies, the Genius
compensates for the average difference in temperature at each of these sites. When int he Tympanic mode, the
Genius will adjust its reading to a user-selected equivalence based on statistical differences. The following
equivalences are available on the Genius:
a. CAL: In the CAL mode, the display will indicate the absolute temperature without adjustment. This
mode should only be used for calibration purposes. Call your COLIN Service Representative for
calibration procedures.
b. ORAL: The tympanic temperature is adjusted to display an oral temperature equivalent.
c. REC: The tympanic temperature is adjusted to display a rectal temperature equivalent.
d. CORE: The tympanic temperature is adjusted to display a core temperature equivalence.
3. The equivalence may be set using the following method:
a. Remove the single screw and door on the underside of the Genius.
b. Move the RELEASE button up and down once.
NOTE
: all adjustments to the microswitch panel must be preceded by moving the RELEASE button up and
down once.
c. Switch 3 is the EQUIV switch. When EQUIV is in the right-hand position (NORM), the equivalence
setting (displayed on the Genius LCD when in TYMPANIC mode) is locked and cannot be changed. To
change the equivalence setting, first place the Genius in TYMPANIC mode, then move dip switch 3 to
the left-hand position and press the MODE button to cycle throughout the setting, CAL, ORAL,
RECTAL, and CORE. When the appropriate equivalence setting is displayed, return switch 3 to the
right-hand position to lock-in the equivalence value.
NOTE
: All other switches are set at the factory and should not be changed.
