Operation: Genius
The Press-Mate 8800G and 8800MS have the First Temp Genius Model 8300G Tympanic Thermometer
attached via the Temp-Mate. The Genius is simple to use and usually measure the patient's temperature in less
than two (2) seconds. Refer to the following instructions to operate the Genius:
1. Tympanic Temperature Measurement
a. Grasp and pull the Genius from the Temp-Mate.
b. Note the mode setting (TYMPANIC, or TIMER) on the Genius display. If the mode setting is not
TYMPANIC, press and release the MODE button on the underside of the Genius until TYMPANIC is
displayed.
c. Note the units of measurement, displayed in either degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius. If the unit displayed is
not the desired unit of measure, press and hold the MODE button on the underside of the Genius until the
desired unit is displayed.
d. The equivalence should be displayed as CORE, REC, or ORAL. This means the tympanic temperature
measured will be automatically converted to the correct equivalent temperature. If CAL is displayed,
change the equivalence as described in Section 4.
e. Place a disposable probe cover on the probe tip. The probe covers are located in the patient pack on the
top of the Temp-Mate.
f.
Place the probe in the ear canal just far enough to seal the opening. If necessary, gently restrain the
patient's head movements while taking his or her temperature. In infants or other patients in which the
probe tip cannot enter the out ear canal, SEAL THE OUTER OPENING with the probe tip while gently
pressing the SCAN button.
g. Press and release the SCAN button. After the measurement is complete, three short beeps will sound.
h. After the triple beep, the Genius display flashes "DONE". Remove the probe from the patient's ear.
i.
Press the RELEASE button to discard the probe cover.
j.
Return the probe to the Temp-Mate making sure that the Genius snaps securely in place. When the
temperature value has been communicated to the Press-Mate, the amber LED on the Temp-Mate will
flash and a short beep will sound. The measured temperature will then be displayed int he Press-Mate
TEMP LED window and the list LCD window.
k. After the value has been read by the Press-Mate, the Genius is ready for another measurement.
NOTE
: COLIN has installed an Anti-Theft feature in the Genius with Software version 2.0 or lower. If a
temperature measurement is attempted without the previous measurement being transmitted to the
Press-Mate, the Genius will display "bP" for the measured temperature. This indicated that the value must
be transmitted to the blood pressure monitor before a subsequent temperature measurement can occur.
