Problems on the Road
. . . 300
CAUTION
The electric engine cooling fan
can start even if the engine is
not running. Be careful around
it.
If you see or hear steam coming
from the engine, stop and turn the
engine off. Do not open the hood
until the engine has cooled down.
If you get the overheat warning
with no sign of steam:
1. Pull over and stop the vehicle
as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Turn off your air conditioner.
3. Run the engine at idle speed
for about 3 minutes.
The engine cooling fan should
be running.
NOTICE
Using the air conditioning while
driving up long hills or in heavy
traffic can make the engine
overheat.
If the fan is not operating and
steam is visible:
1. Turn off the engine.
2. Move away from the vehicle
without opening the hood.
3. Let the engine cool down.
4. When steam is no longer
visible, carefully open the
hood.
5. Have the vehicle serviced as
soon as possible.
CAUTION
Steam from an overheated
engine can burn you badly.
Stay away from the engine if
you see or hear steam coming
from it.

If the fan is operating with no sign
of steam:
1. Open the hood.
2. Let the engine idle until it is
cool.
3. Check the coolant level.
See "Engine Coolant" in
Section 4.
If the fan is operating but the
engine temperature does not fall:
1. Turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood.
3. Let the engine cool down.
4. Check the coolant level.
If the coolant level is low, there
may be a leak in the cooling
system.
Check for leaks in the following:
• Radiator
• Radiator Hoses
• Radiator Connections
• Heater Hoses
• Heater Hose Connections
• Water Pump
If the coolant is leaking, have it
fixed immediately.
Do not drive the vehicle until these
problems have been resolved.
If the coolant is not leaking but the
coolant level is low, add coolant to
bring the level up to the proper
mark.
See "Engine Coolant" in Section 4.
CAUTION
Steam and scalding liquids from
a hot cooling system can blow
out and burn you badly. Never
turn the cap when the engine
and cooling system are hot.
CAUTION
Engine coolant can be
hazardous. If ingested, it can
cause illness and death. Keep
out of reach of children. Avoid
repeated or prolonged contact
with skin. Wash hands after
handling.
