Chemical Waste Hazards

Samples and waste bottle contents should be handled by procedures recommended in
the CDC/NIH manual: Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL).
The manual is available from the U.S. Government Printing Office or online at
http://www.cdc.gov/biosafety/publications/bmbl5/.
Depending on the samples used, waste bottle contents may constitute a biohazard. Use
precaution when emptying the waste bottle. Dispose of waste bottle contents in accor-
dance with good laboratory practices and local, state/provincial, or national environmen-
tal and health regulations.

Read and understand the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) provided by the manufacturers of the chemicals
in the waste container before you store, handle, or dispose of chemical waste.

Minimize contact with chemical waste. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when han-
dling chemicals (e.g., safety glasses, gloves, or clothing).

Use precaution when emptying the waste bottle.
•
Dispose of waste bottle contents in accordance with good laboratory practices and local, state/pro-
vincial, or national environmental and health regulations.
