5.3.12 Taking Off the Protective Cover
Before taking off the protective cover, you have to

Pull the power cord before you open the device!
In the bottom area of the rear side of the protective cover there are 2 holes behind which there
are white push-buttons.
Push these two buttons to mechanically unlock and take off the protective cover. Hold the cover
on both handles at the side and lift it off from above.
5.3.13 Microscope Acquisitions
Microscope acquisitions are possible in two different configurations. Some microscopes are
small enough to be placed inside the dark box. This mode is only possible using the USB cam-
era. The second possibility is using an external microscope in a dark chamber. This configura-
tion requires a special solution and is not described in this manual.
To perform microscope acquisition inside the NightOWL proceed as follows.
Positioning the camera at working height
Move the camera transport unit to a height that allows you to easily remove the camera (several
centimeters above the bottom plate).
Discharge electrostatics before carrying out any work.

Open the door of the acquisition chamber to check the movement of the camera transport
unit. Check that there is no sample tray or any other device which may block the camera
movement.
Do not reach into the acquisition chamber while the transport unit is moving!

Move the camera (z-axis) into the low position (step 98000) using the service software or
indiGO. Click on
, select Position and choose
Z-Axis and Position from the dropdown menu.

Enter 98000 steps at the prompt and press OK to
move the camera to the specified position..

The camera moves down to the working height. Switch
off the system after the position is reached.

Unplug the power and USB connector from the
camera.
Discharge electrostatics before touching the connector!

Remove the air adapters from the camera. Fix them at the camera
plate (transport lock) so they cannot block the camera drive move-
ment.

Unscrew the camera screws and remove the camera from the in-
strument.

Replace the current camera power cable at the outlet with an ex-
tended version and also extend the USB cable using a specific USB extension cable. These
cables are available at Berthold upon request.
