LB 983 NightOWL II Operating Manual
Quick Start
21
USB Version (NC100u ID 40508-30)
Configuration of the USB version is a lot eas
ier, thanks to ‚plug and play’.
To assure the proper operation of the NightOWL device drivers are necessary. All device driv-
ers are automatically installed through the indiGO software setup.
When connecting the instrument to PC, new devices are detected through the windows device
manager. Using the automatic installation (not using the Windows update driver repository) the
drivers are installed automatically. This procedure can take a while.
If after inserting / power on of the NightOWL II
a ‚USB -> Serial Converter‘ is identified instead
of
‚Berthold Technologies NightOWL‘, the NightOWL II has not yet been programmed for opera-
tion with indiGO. In this case, please contact the Berthold customer service to have the device
re-programmed accordingly.
emCCD Camera (NC100emID 40508-40)
The emCCD camera includes a proprietary interface card which is available as PCI or PCI ex-
press card. This interface card has to be installed into the PC. For further information on in-
stalling additional cards please refer to your PC documentation.
The interface card requires an additional power supply in the PC which is provided via a 4-pole
standard AMP connector which is also used in DVD drives. If only S-ATA power supply con-
nectors are available you have to use an adapter.
The connection to the NightOWLII is established by means of the enclosed special cable which
is plugged into the NightOWL II rear panel and on the interface card.
Once the card has been installed in the PC, it will be recognized as new hardware the next time
the system is booted up again.
4.1.8 Power On
Once all cables have been connected, you may power on the NightOWL II at the mains switch.
After power on, the device runs through an initialization process and all relevant components
will be initialized. During this time, the LED on the front panel is flashing red.
In the course of the initialization process, the camera drive is moved up in order to find the
home position. The NightOWL II is ready for operation after initialization. The camera needs
about 10 minutes to reach its operating temperature. Preparative steps, such as correct posi-
tioning of the camera or setting of the fluorescence filter can be carried out already at this stage.
indiGO has to be started to initialize the device and the camera (temperature) completely, since
the final initialization takes place at the start of the program.
