5.3.4 Camera and Lens
NightOWL II LB 983 can operate with different camera systems. The following camera is sup-
plied as standard: NightOWL Cam NC 100U, hermetically vacuum encapsulated and cooled
down by a Peltier element to -70°C (the operating temperature is reached after about 10
minutes). The ambient temperature should not exceed 28°C to ensure the proper operation of
the camera cooling.
The camera is connected with the electronics via 2 cables (voltage supply and USB communi-
cation) on its top side.
Maximum sample size for standard resolution images:
230 mm x 340 mm, for the NC-320 camera; With the NC-100 camera the max. sample size is
250 mm x 250 mm.
The camera is compact, so that it can easily be installed on a microscope.
The standard
lens is a 25 mm wide open lens. The software includes a calibrated data set for
automatic setting of this lens.
Distance and diaphragm are set at infinity (= widest opening). This setting is calibrated and fixed
with screws. You should keep this setting, since any modification will result in a deterioration of
the light flow rate.
Discharge electrostatics before taking out the camera.
Clean the camera and lens only with special cleaning products from your photo
shop (see page 112).
5.3.5 Camera Transport Unit
Camera and lens are installed on the camera transport unit on two levels that can be shifted
relative to each other. The camera is fixed to the upper level by two knurled screws, the lens is
installed into the C-mount adapter on the lower level from below.
To adjust the focus, both levels are shifted relative to each other. This movement is controlled
by the software and effected via a spindle (at the back of the camera transport unit).
The movement of the camera transport unit is controlled by the software.
The automatic setting of camera and focus take place via the sample size and height parame-
ter.
In emergencies you can move the spindle by hand, for example when the camera transport unit
has accidentally hit the bottom plate. This only works, when the instrument is turned off.
