Access to ATM Networks
Ethernet and token ring networks can access an ATM network via a Model
5000AH chassis equipped with a Model 5780 ATM Router and Model 5380
Ethernet Router or Model 5580 Token Ring Router. The ATM router segments and
reassembles packets to ATM cells for transmission over the ATM network. The
PPX backplane in a Model 5000AH chassis provides high-speed packet transfer
between the routers in the chassis.
A basic System 5000 ATM environment consists of the following devices and
software:
•
Model 5000AH backplane in a 100BASE-T chassis
•
Model 5740 Switch Control Module
•
Model 5720 Switch Fabric Module
•
Model 5714 host modules or Model 5700 media adapter host modules that
provide ports for ATM connectivity
•
ATM Control Software that consists of Connection Management System
(CMS) and Multicast Server (MCS) software to handle switched virtual
circuit (SVC) and permanent virtual circuit (PVC) call processing as well as
LAN emulation services over an ATM network.
