This c hapter explains how to us e s tatus polling.
There are two types of Status Polling:

Inquiry Reques t—inform ation about the readines s of the printer.
♦
Job Reques t—inform ation about the c urrent (or las t rec eived) job downloaded to the printer.
I nqu i ry R eques t ( E N Q)
An ENQ c harac ter ac ts as a reques t for printer s tatus inform ation. Send an ENQ in front of, in
the m iddle of, or im m ediately following any pac ket downloaded to the printer. An ENQ is a
c om m and that c an be exec uted as part of a pac ket or s ent on its own (us ing a c om m unic ations
program ). An ENQ is proc es s ed im m ediately. The ENQ c harac ter is us er defined.

Inquiry Response
Printer s tatus is returned to the hos t in a 3-byte (3-c harac ter) s equenc e. The firs t byte is the
non-printable us er-defined ENQ c harac ter, whic h is not vis ible on the res pons e. The s ec ond and
third bytes are printer s tatus c odes . See the ENQ Referenc e Tables for the m eaning of bytes 2
and 3.

The s tatus c odes (A and B in this c as e) are ASCII equivalents to the hexadec im al bits that
repres ent the various types of s tatus res pons es . This res pons e indic ates that the printer is
online (Charac ter A) and that there is a s toc k fault (Charac ter B).
