3.3.2 Switching reference signal
The reference signal can be switched between the signal built into the
MD8470A and the external signal. The signal built into the MD8470A is
set as the reference signal by initial settings at startup. When using the
external signal as the reference signal, switch the reference signal using
the procedure shown below.
[Procedure]
1. Input an external reference signal to the 10MHz Ref Input connector
on the rear panel of the MD8470A. Input the external reference
signal frequency within 10 MHz

0.5 ppm and at a level of 0 dBm or
higher.
2. Right-click on the icon to open the pop-up menu as shown in Fig.
3.3.2-1, and select “Reference”
→
“External.”
Select External.

When switching the reference signal to the built-in signal, select “Refer-
ence”
→
“Internal” from the pop-up menu shown above.
The icon may turn red when the reference signal is switched. Move the
pointer onto the icon, and check the following points when “Reference is
not locked.” is displayed as shown in Fig.3.3.2-2.

Is the signal input to the 10MHz Ref Input connector when “External” is
set?

Is the signal input to the 10MHz Ref Input connector within 10 MHz

0.5 ppm and 0 dBm or higher when “External” is set?
The MD8470A may have failed when error is displayed, even when the
check items above are passed. Contact Anritsu Service and Sales office
in this event.
