SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The 3M™ BT-54 Breathing Tube is designed to be used in conjunction
with the 3M™ TR-802E and TR-602E Powered Air Turbo and a Scott
Safety Promask FM3 or VisionFM4 Facemask. These systems meet the
requirements of EN 12942:1998 + A2:2008 (Respiratory protective
devices – Powered filtering devices). The systems are intended to provide
protection against a range of particulate/gas and vapour ha
z
ards or
nuisance odours.
^
<insert warning triangle> Systems incorporating certain filters must not
be used with the Powered Air Turbos operating at medium and/or high
flow. These specific systems may display a low flow alarm immediately
when used and are identified in the Technical Specification section of this
user instruction.
^
WARNINGS AND LIMITATIONS
Use this respirator system strictly in accordance with all instructions:
• - contained in this booklet,
• accompanying other components of the system. (e.g. TR-602E/TR-802E
Powered Air Turbo Reference Leaflet, Filter User Instructions and
PromaskFM3/ VisionFM4 User Instructions).
Refer to Promask FM3/ VisionFM4 user instructions for limitations relating
to protection factors.
Do not use in concentrations of contaminant requiring a greater protection
factor stated in the Promask FM3/ VisionFM4 user instructions.
Do not use for respiratory protection against unknown atmospheric
contaminants or when concentrations of contaminants are unknown or
immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
Do not use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen. (3M
definition. Individual countries may apply their own limits on oxygen
deficiency. Seek advice if in doubt).
Do not use these products in oxygen or oxygen-enriched atmospheres.
These products do not supply oxygen.
Only use with Powered Air Turbos, Promask FM3/ VisionFM4 Facemasks
and Spares/Accessories referenced in these user instructions or listed in
the relevant reference leaflets. Only use within the usage conditions given
in the Technical Specification.
Do not use Supplied Air Units as part of this system.
Only for use by trained competent personnel.
Leave the contaminated area immediately if:
a) Any part of the system becomes damaged.
b) Airflow into the facepiece decreases or stops
c) Low airflow or low battery alarms activate.
d) Breathing becomes difficult.
e) Di

iness or other distress occurs.
f) You smell or taste contaminants or irritation occurs.
Never modify or alter this produ

PREPARATION
F
OR USE
Respirator systems are intended to help reduce exposures to certain
contaminants and should always be handled with care and fully inspected
prior to use.
C
heck apparatus is complete, undamaged and correctly assembled. Any
damaged or defective parts must be replaced with original 3M spare parts
before use. Undertake pre-use checks on Promask FM3/ VisionFM4
Facemasks and TR-602E/TR-802E Powered Air Turbo as outlined in the
appropriate user instruction.
Breathing Tube
Inspect the breathing tube for tears, holes or cracks. Ensure two gaskets
are present at the end of the breathing tube that connects to the
TR-602E/TR-802E Powered Air Turbo (see Fig 1), and ensure they are
not damaged. The breathing tube should fit firmly into the Powered Air
Turbo and should attach securely to the Promask FM3/ VisionFM4 Full
Facemask.
Airflow Che
c
k
Note:
The TR-973 Airflow Indicator must be connected to the
TR-602E/TR-802E Powered Air Turbo prior to powering on the Powered
Air Turbo in order to activate tight-fitting mode. If the Powered Air Turbo is
powered on prior to connecting the TR-973 Airflow Indicator, the Powered
Air Turbo will operate in loose-fitting mode. To activate tight-fitting mode
the Powered Air Turbo must be turned off and restarted with the TR-973
Airflow Indicator installed. Tight-fitting mode is indicated on the Powered
Air Turbo when the Facepiece icon is lit (see Fig 2).
The Powered Air Turbo is pre-calibrated to ensure the required airflow is
provided. It also compensates for changes in air density, which is affected
by elevation (height above sea level) and air temperature. Before use,
undertake airflow check using the airflow indicator tube as shown in Fig 3.
Insert the TR-973 Airflow Indicator into the outlet of the Powered Air
Turbo and switch on by pressing and holding the power button for 1
second. Allow the Powered Air Turbo to run for 1 minute to allow the
airflow to stabilise.
With the airflow check tube in the vertical position, ensure that the bottom
of the floating ball rests at, or above, the minimum flow mark for the 'letter'
representing your '
z
one' (see Fig 3). To determine your
z
one, you need to
know the elevation and temperature for the environment where you are
conducting the airflow check. Find the
z
one where your elevation and
temperature intersect on the chart shown in Fig 4.
Alarm Che
c
k
Perform alarm check as outlined in the TR-602E/TR-802E Powered Air
Turbo User Instructions.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Refer to the FM3/FM4 Facemask user instructions for assembly and
donning instructions for the facemask
Conne
c
ting and donning Powered Air Turbo
1. Insert the bottom end of the breathing tube into the outlet of the
Powered Air Turbo and turn the end of the breathing tube to ensure it is
fitted firmly.
2. Switch on the Powered Air Turbo by pressing the on button for 1
second. See TR-602E/TR-802E Powered Air Turbo User Instructions for
information to ensure the Powered Air Turbo is operating correctly.
Note:
The BT-54 Breathing tube must be connected to the
TR-602E/TR-802E Powered Air Turbo prior to powering on the Powered
Air Turbo in order to activate tight-fitting mode. If the Powered Air Turbo is
powered on prior to connecting the BT-54 Breathing Tube the Powered
Air Turbo will operate in loose-fitting mode. To activate tight-fitting mode
the Powered Air Turbo must be turned off and restarted with the BT-54
breathing tube installed. Tight-fitting mode is indicated on the Powered Air
Turbo when the Facepiece icon is lit (see Fig 2). Once the Powered Air
Turbo is running in tight-fitting mode it will remain in tight-fitting mode,
even if the breathing tube is removed, as long as the Powered Air Turbo
is not powered down. In tight-fitting mode, the Powered Air Turbo

<insert warning triangle> Systems incorporating certain filters must not
be used with the Powered Air Turbos operating at medium and/or high
flow. These specific systems may display a low flow alarm immediately
when used. The specific systems are:
FM4 with TR-602E – TR-6310E/TR-6580E must not be used in high flow
setting
FM4 with TR-802E – TR-6110E/TR-6130E must not be used in high flow

Battery Durations (hours)*
* Estimated system duration based on testing with a new battery and a
new, clean filter at 20°C. Actual system duration may be extended or
shortened depending on system configuration and environment.
** To conserve battery power in certain airflow settings, in some
facemask/filter configurations, the Powered Air Turbo may automatically
step down at this time to a lower airflow setting. If this occurs, a 4hr
duration will be achieved. The step down feature can be over-ridden by
the user by pressing the flow control button to move the airflow back to
the higher flow. The low battery alarm and low flow alarm will always
operate as described in this user instruction. When either alarm sounds,
users must immediately exit the contaminated area
