LAN Emulation
Overview
LAN Emulation
(LANE) is a method of using the services of existing LANs
across and ATM network in order to support the software layer for end
systems. It allows LAN users to connect to an ATM network while the
software applications interact as if they were attached to a traditional
LAN.
LANE allows the following services to be emulated into the network:
Connectionless Services
— LAN stations are able to send data
without previously establishing connections. LANE provides the
appearance of connectionless services to the participating end
stations.
Multicast Services
— LANE services support the use of multicast
MAC addresses. This service is especially used when end stations share
the same media.
MAC Driver Interfaces in ATM Stations
— Using this service,
applications can access the ATM network via a variety of protocol
