Thick Ethernet Repeaters
Repeaters in Thick Ethernet segments operate in much the same way as those used in
Thin Ethernet segments
. However, the use of a repeater connected to a thick cable
trunk requires an AUI drop cable and MAU transceiver.
Thick Ethernet supports maximum segment lengths of 500 meters (1640 feet). Signal
repeaters can interconnect a maximum of five full length segments to extend the total
length and distance of the entire network. The five segment maximum assumes that the
maximum length-per-segment is used on each segment. If it is not, then the entire
network can have more than the maximum of five segments, but must not exceed the
maximum total network span of 2500 meters (8200 feet).
If an MAU transceiver equipped with a System Quality Error test function is used as a
repeater transceiver, you must disable the test (a transceiver is used when connecting a
repeater to a Thick Ethernet cable trunk). You can, however, enable the test when using
the MAU as a ZT 8995-D2 transceiver.
TWISTED-PAIR ETHERNET CABLING
Each Twisted-Pair Ethernet node has its own interface to a central hub. This interface
can be a repeater, bridge, or host interface module. Refer to the "
Twisted Pair Ethernet
Connection
" figure. The presence of a unique interface for each node on a central hub
constitutes a "star" topology, in contrast to the "bus" topology that has been previously
described. Star segments connect to either Thin or Thick Ethernet segments by means
of a twisted-pair repeater or bridge. Twisted-Pair Ethernet supports a maximum twisted-
pair wiring length of 100 meters (325 feet) per node. A star segment actually consists of
a maximum of one node per segment. A node includes the transceiver, whether it is off
board or on board. See the "
